Disney made me an addict to musical movies. And I really don’t mind

Oh, God! Disney has gone and done it again. I blame Disney. I generally do. Except about men. That’s all fault. But today, I’m specifically blaming Disney for my love of musicals. What with everyone, including me, being obsessed with Frozen’s “Let it go”, I realized that the very first musical movies I watched as a little girl, were Disney’s.  Back when I was little (in the dark ages known as the pre-Internet era), Disney released some pretty awesome movies. Between 1989 and 1995, I was desperate to go watch Disney’s latest animation movies. I loved the characters. I loved the stories. But what I loved the most, were the songs. Now, almost 20 years later, what I remember the most are the songs. And I still love them to this day. Don’t tell me you don’t know them all by heart because I won’t believe you.

I know The Little Mermaid is about Ariel’s dream of becoming human and leaving her entire world behind. And though Eric might possibly have been my first fictional boyfriend, what I remember the most is that Ariel was a total fangirl. Ok, granted. She was fangirling over the human world, but who am I to judge?

I think I heard this song on my soundtrack cassette at least a million times!

And I know I was just 7 years old back then, but I’ve never shipped anyone as much as I shipped Ariel and Eric. They were my Olicity back then.

Then came Beauty and the Beast and I was a goner for life. I think that this song and dance sequence were the ones that cemented my lifelong love for musicals. And when you hear this song in Celine Dion’s voice…. chills! All the feels! And this was waaaaaay before Titanic and that other shiver-inducing song.

I know that Aladdin was a thief and stuff, but back then he showed me A Whole New World and I loved him for it:

This song is a masterpiece!!! An milestone in film history and a Grammy Award winning hit! I swear that I get chills when I listen to it even now.

This movie had other amazing songs such as “One jump ahead” and “Friend like me”, but I swear the song that struck me the most was “Arabian Nights”.

That was the opening sequence to the movie, you guys! Wasn’t it just perfection? Even then I knew, just by watching this intro, that the movie would be something special. Another movie that has the most epic, emotional, all-the-feels, opening sequence and song is The Lion King.

Can this song be any better? I doubt it. This is the kind of song that even if you are a little girl and don’t fully understand the concept behind the lyrics you just know it’s special. That’s what I love about musicals (and music in general, really). The way it has of conveying feelings and emotions. This song is so powerful, that I ended up in tears, that first time I heard it.

If you thought “A whole new world” was romantic, “Can you feel the love tonight” might have murdered you. The reluctant, tortured hero… I’ve been measuring all love songs in musicals to this very song.

And yeah, there are some other perfect Disney songs that made me so happy growing up, I could help but become a musical addict.

So… Do you like musicals? Which is your favorite Disney song?

80’s kid, 90’s teen. That sums it up quite nicely. Fan of almost everything. There’s not enough room in cyber-space to list everything (or every guy / fictional character I have the hots for), but I’ll try: Outlander book series ultimate fan (‘cuz JAMMF is just perfection), YA and romance novel avid reader, BSB fan to the death. Current TV Shows addiction: Outlander, Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Being Human UK. Past addictions: Friends, Glee, Spartacus, Smash, Arrow, The Tudors, Battlestar Galactica, Lost (I’m an ending-hater). The Hot List: Luke Evans, Aidan Turner, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Gerard Butler, Theo James, Nick Carter, Henry Cavill, Chris Hemsworth, Stephen Amell, Hugh Jackman and I could keep going to infinity. Oh! And I believe in the God of Google!
