The tagline on that very first teaser poster was right. All I have to say after watching this movie is “thank you”.
Star-Lord’s first scene is awesome. The catchy 70′s pop tune at the beginning, Peter Quill dancing to it while he listens to the song on a pretty old walkman and then the title explodes on your screen in big, yellow letters is just perfect. And it completely sets the mood for this cheeky, funny, irreverent and lovable movie.
You don’t have to know anything about this character or comic book to enjoy the movie. Gamora and Star-Lord may not be as well-known as Iron Man or The Hulk, but you’ll fall in love with them as soon as they appear on screen.
I won’t do a normal review or synopsis for this movie, you can read that anywhere else. I’ll just tell you why this movie worked for me:
- The soundtrack. Like I need that CD now! I’ll even take a cassette! The 70′s and 80′s song are pure bliss and used so effectively, you’ll end up humming those tunes for weeks after watching the movie.
- The cast. The chemistry between them all as something palpable.
- All the 80′s and pop culture references. I’m sure I haven’t even noticed them all.
- The humor. There’s everything. From sexual innuendos to cute things like Drax taking everything everyone says literally.
- The flaws. All these characters are flawed and sort of broken. Which makes the audience very empathetic with them and makes you love them at first sight.
- The wonderful feeling of knowing that anything is possible. This movie is filled with “why not?” moments. And every single one of them works.
- The opening scene. Very dramatic, very moving. You can’t help but feel all the feels for poor little Peter Quill.
- The dialogue. I need to see this movie again just to hear some of the awesome lines the characters deliver.
Do yourself a favor and go see this movie. You’ll have a looooooot of fun!
