Let’s start with “American Hustle”. I really liked it! The big hair distracted me (there was some serious HAIR), specially Bale’s complicated comb-over, but I didn’t hate the styling like I do most movies that are set in the ’70s.
Amy Adams was flawless. Her dresses, her hair, her makeup, everything. I loved her. I had a slight issue with the accent, like I couldn’t really pick up on the British, but I think she was amazing. Bale was great too, I love how he can just transform for every role and be a completely different person each time. Jeremy Renner’s hair. OMG. That is all. Bradley cooper was just…. Bradley Cooper. It’s like every time I see him play these types of characters, the ones that can talk up a storm and are really outgoing and stuff, I get the impression that that’s how he is in his every day life. Like he’s not really doing something different from who he is. I like it, don’t get me wrong. And the curlers. LOL. I loved that part.
Now, JLaw. She was okay in it, I don’t think it was Golden Globe material, though. Not when you put her against someone like Lupita Nyong’o, for example. But that’s something to discuss in another post. What was up with the nail polish? I think I recognised the bottle, LOL.
ALLY: Yeah, the themed double feature worked pretty good for me too! They are both great movies, though I liked American Hustle better. The whole con (well, actually all of the cons, the more specific ones and the long con) were brilliant! The time setting was flawless! All of the clothing, the hair styles, the locations… It was sheer perfection.
All the cast was spectacular. Bale is an amazing actor that can do anything. When seeing American Hustle, you can’t believe that that big-belly dude is Batman. And I think his comb over bothered me to distraction, much more than his gut did.
I agree with you. I couldn’t pick up Amy Adam’s British (?) accent. At all! And I’m a sucker for accents, so I should have been able pick it up. But no. To me, she was just talking weird. She was spotless, though. But please, get that girl a bra!
Bradley Cooper was fine. I think most of his characters are very similar, so it wasn’t such a great performance. His hair stole the show, actually! Hahaha! On the other hand, Jeremy Renner was fantastic. Even with the big hair, I just focused on him. He was great in his character. I loved it. And I loved the fact that they didn’t put his creepy fingers right in front of the camera. Now… Jennifer Lawrence. I love her. I have a big ol’ girl crush on her and I think most of her performances are superb. This one is too. Though I kept expecting her up-hair-do to fall every 5 seconds.
Shes was amazing, but that ain’t Oscar / Golden Globes material!!! WTF? I’ve seen other movies with nominations and there were far better performances. Case in point: Emma Thompson (my other girl crush, hahaha).
Now… even though I loved the movie and was totally fascinated by the plot and cons, for the life of me, I can’t remember a single character’s name. Hahaha! I just remember that Amy’s character introduces herself as Lady something… but I keep coming up with names from Downton Abbey!!!
GWEN: OMG the names didn’t stick with me at all, either. I FORGOT ABOUT DE NIRO! Playing a mobster, classic. Just 2 minutes on screen, but he was flawless. His stare scared even me!
I wish the twist had been a little bit more difficult to see coming, but its not as if it was SOOOO obvious. And I liked the love story between Amy and Christian’s characters. The no bra thing didn’t bother me as much, I think. After all, it was the ’70s, and women didn’t wear them back then. The dresses fit her perfectly, so it’s not like it was distracting or anything. I liked how unstable Jennifer character’s was and how they showed that, but come on, it wasn’t THAT hard to play, right? What I mean is, she did the same thing she did in “Silver Linings Playbook”. Just laugh out loud like a crazy person a bit and that’s it.
ALLY: See? What’s with the names? I can’t remember a single one of them! hahahaha
De Nir0 is always flawless! And I didn’t know he was in the movie. So it totally took me by surprise. I didn’t see the twist coming up. I’m a dork that way. So may be that’s why I liked the movie so much. I didn’t see it coming.
Talking about the dresses, they fit Amy perfectly. But the bra thing just… I don’t know… Jennifer’s character was a bomb about to explode at any minute! I loved how you never knew what the heck would come out of her mouth! You were always expecting her to screw something up.
Before we switch to the other movie… how obsessed am I that I thought of Luke Evans when they sang “Delilah” by Tom Jones in the movie, cuz there’s a video of him singing that on You Tube? I swear… I’m starting to get worried. I need help. ASAP.
GWEN: Now, onto “Wolf of Wall Street”. I looooooved this movie. I’m probably biased because Leo is one of my great loves, and I love Scorsese. But I found it funny and the story was very well told.
Leo is amazing in it, and if he doesn’t get the Oscar this time, then the Academy has no soul. No soul, I tell you!

I know that the characters are based on actual people, and the story is based on a true story, but WHAT WAS UP WITH JONAH HILL’S TEETH?? UGH, so very distracting. All I remember from him in the movie are his teeth.

Also, no spoilers, but the people who already saw it will know, the country club scene had me laughing out loud so hard! Almost no one else in the theater did, which I don’t understand, but it was hilarious to me. And can we talk about Margot Robbie for a second?? She’s GORGEOUS. Like, on a whole another level of gorgeousness. The type of girl who can turn any girl gay without even trying. And she was also very good in the movie. I don’t know how she managed to fight like that with Leo, because I couldn’t, but she did a great job.
ALLY: Ok. “The Wolf of Wall Street”. I can recognize greatness when I see it. And this movie is beyond great. But I didn’t like it as much. I don’t know what it was… But I didn’t like it so much, it was a bit long for me and it felt like it dragged a little at the end (and, trust me, I’m used to watching 3 hour long movies, so it wasn’t that).
DiCaprio was perfect. OMG that guy can ACT! He steals every scene he is in. He is magnetic. He can transform himself for each character he does without any make up or prosthetics. Just his face. He is really something else. He totally deserves an Oscar. He should have gotten several by now, if we are being honest about it. Him leaving the country club scene was just an example of how perfect an actor he is. I didn’t laugh, sorry. I didn’t find that scene funny at all. I felt pity for him, sadness. He had everything and in that scene he was less than nothing. And he could loose everything, just for being an idiot. That scene was terrible.
Margot Robbie? We should just kill her. She can’t be sooooooooooooooo gorgeous! At first, I thought she was just another pretty face and that’s it. But damn! She can act too!
Oh! One thing I forgot: WTF Jonah Hill’s teeth?!?!? He looked like he had swallowed a piano!!!
