New Amsterdam… Forever

New Amsterdam… Forever

We all know that there’s nothing new to be invented. We all know that theory that says that there are only like 9 universal stories and that every tale that is told is a variation of that tale. And we all know we are living in the era of the sequels / prequels / remakes / adaptations. So this comes as no surprise.

I mean… have you guys seen the new show “Forever”? And have you ever seen the long ago cancelled show “New Amsterdam”? Yeah… know what I mean, right?

I wanted to watch Forever because it has several things that interest me:

- Ioan Gruffudd, obviously.

- It’s set in NYC

- It deals with this whole immortality thing which always caught my attention. Not because I wanna live forever, but I like to see the issue treated as a burden rather than a perk. So I’ve always liked the stories regarding poor, tortured vampires and immortals.

- It’s a sort of procedural show, with a different case per episode.

So I watched it. Ok, I have just watched the pilot episode, haven’t seen the 2nd episode as of yet. But still… I felt I was having a deja-vu. Like, seriously. A very big one.

I know most people are comparing the show to “Highlander” cuz of the inability to die thingy, but for me, this show is 105% “New Amsterdam”. I know I might be among the few people comparing it to that show because, let’s be honest, only 8 of us watched it back in 2008. But let me clue you in about the similarities between these 2 shows.

- Both are set in Manhattan.

- Both star hot men. Ok, one hails from Britain and the other plays a Dutch, but still. They are both foreigners.

- John Amsterdam was made immortal 400 years ago when he gave his life to defend a native-american woman. Henry Morgan was made immortal 200 years ago when he gave his life to defend an African man.

- Both have died over a hundred deaths and they always come back. Though I prefer Ioan’s rebirth: stark-naked.

- Both are obsessed with death an study it.

- Both have police related work: John Amsterdam was a detective while Henry Moore is a medical examiner.

- In the pilot episode, they both die in the subway. I kid you not.

- They both have female partners who are of Latin descend.

- They both are friends with 60 year old men, who are the only ones who know their secret. Thank God Henry’s didn’t turn out to be his son (well… kinda), because I would have started throwing things at my beautiful new TV screen and I didn’t want that.

- Both are searching for a way to die.

- Both have an incredible wealth of knowledge from all they have studied and lived. I kinda like how they are using this in “Forever”, having Henry Morgan deduce things. he ain’t no Sherlock, but it’s kinda neat.

- They both had a one-true-love who obviously died, duh, and they are always pining for her.

Now, I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. Quite the contrary. I loved New Amsterdam and I was gutted when it got cancelled. So I’m so happy I’m having sort of a re-boot. LOL. Besides, Ioan is not only hot (my 2nd favorite Welshman), has a super cute soft accent, but he is also charismatic as hell.

So I’ll be tuning in every week to see what the eternal Dr. Henry Morgan is up to. Will you?

80’s kid, 90’s teen. That sums it up quite nicely. Fan of almost everything. There’s not enough room in cyber-space to list everything (or every guy / fictional character I have the hots for), but I’ll try: Outlander book series ultimate fan (‘cuz JAMMF is just perfection), YA and romance novel avid reader, BSB fan to the death. Current TV Shows addiction: Outlander, Game of Thrones, Arrow (I ship Olicity. Hard.), The Big Bang Theory, Marvel Agents of SHIELD. Past addictions: Friends, Glee, Spartacus, Smash, The Tudors, Battlestar Galactica, Lost (I’m an ending-hater). The Hot List: Luke Evans, Gerard Butler, Theo James, Nick Carter, Henry Cavill, Chris Hemsworth, Stephen Amell, Hugh Jackman and I could keep going to infinity. Oh! And I believe in the God of Google!
