Hello there. I have a confession to make. I’m behind on my “To Read” list. Like, way behind. Not only do I have a huge stack of books just lying there on my bookshelves waiting to be read (which stare me in the face first thing in the morning and are the last thing I see before going to bed at night), but also, my ebook reader is bursting at the seams.
Last night I updated my ebook reader and uploaded yet more books (but I haven’t finished reading all the ones that were already in there). And then, it hit me. God! I have so much to read!!!
So, this post serves a double purpose:
First, to have in plain sight and in public all the books I need to read. Maybe this will force me to get on with it.
And, second, because misery loves company. I’m sure you guys have the same problem.
Thing is, I’ve been re-reading The Hobbit (ok, it only took me less than a week, but still). And now, as I am in a Sherlock-is-over-denial-mode, I’ve started reading Arthur Conan Doyle’s complete works (that’ll take me some time). So I’m kinda stuck. Yeah, I know. It’s no excuse…
Ok, here’s my pending “To Read” list. Maybe the same books are on your future reading list, maybe you’ve already read them and can review them for me or maybe, you are inspired by this post to read some of these. Be it as it may, enjoy!
MY “TO READ” LIST
“Letters from Skye: A Novel” by Jessica Brockmole
People were recommending this book on a Facebook group I follow. Of course, I was hooked after reading the 1st review. The book is a story told in letters, spanning two continents and two world wars. Amazon says that “the novel captures the indelible ways that people fall in love, and celebrates the power of the written word to stir the heart”. The back cover reads as follows: “March 1912: Twenty-four-year-old Elspeth Dunn, a published poet, has never seen the world beyond her home on Scotland’s remote Isle of Skye. So she is astonished when her first fan letter arrives, from a college student, David Graham, in far-away America. As the two strike up a correspondence—sharing their favorite books, wildest hopes, and deepest secrets—their exchanges blossom into friendship, and eventually into love. But as World War I engulfs Europe and David volunteers as an ambulance driver on the Western front, Elspeth can only wait for him on Skye, hoping he’ll survive. June 1940: At the start of World War II, Elspeth’s daughter, Margaret, has fallen for a pilot in the Royal Air Force. Her mother warns her against seeking love in wartime, an admonition Margaret doesn’t understand. Then, after a bomb rocks Elspeth’s house, and letters that were hidden in a wall come raining down, Elspeth disappears. Only a single letter remains as a clue to Elspeth’s whereabouts. As Margaret sets out to discover where her mother has gone, she must also face the truth of what happened to her family long ago”. I so need a cup of tea and a box of tissues for this one, right?
“If I Stay” and “Where She Went” by Gayle Forman
Yes, I like crying while reading books… Don’t ask. The first book is about a 17 year old girl who is involved in a car crash and is left in a comma. But she is separated from her unconscious body and can see everything that’s going on around her. The 2nd book (which I didn’t want to read the summary), is told from her boyfriend’s perspective, some years later. I didn’t wanna read the summary cuz the title kinda scares me and I don’t to have the 1st one spoiled.
“The Spectacular Now” by Tim Tharp
Haven’t watched the movie either. I know. I’m a disaster! According to Amazon: “SUTTER KEELY. He’s the guy you want at your party. He’ll get everyone dancing. He’ ll get everyone in your parents’ pool. Okay, so he’s not exactly a shining academic star. He has no plans for college and will probably end up folding men’s shirts for a living. But there are plenty of ladies in town, and with the help of Dean Martin and Seagram’s V.O., life’s pretty fabulous, actually. Until the morning he wakes up on a random front lawn, and he meets Aimee. Aimee’s clueless. Aimee is a social disaster. Aimee needs help, and it’s up to the Sutterman to show Aimee a splendiferous time and then let her go forth and prosper. But Aimee’s not like other girls, and before long he’s in way over his head. For the first time in his life, he has the power to make a difference in someone else’s life—or ruin it forever”.
“Winter’s Tale” by Mark Helprin
I saw the movie and loved it. So, obviously, now I wanna read the damn book. Mark Helprin’s book will transport you to New York of the Belle Epoque, to a city clarified by a siege of unprecedented snows. One winter night, Peter Lake – master mechanic and second-storey man – attempts to rob a fortress-like mansion on the Upper West Side. Though he thinks it is empty, the daughter of the house is home. Thus begins the affair between a middle-aged Irish burglar and Beverly Penn, a young girl dying of consumption. It is a love so powerful that Peter Lake, a simple and uneducated man, will be driven to stop time and bring back the dead.
“The King: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood” by J.R. Ward
Yup. Big fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood over here. I didn’t like Wrath’s book (my favorite was, is and forever will be Rhage), but I gotta give the King another chance. According to Amazon: “After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle–with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything–and everyone–at risk. Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response–or the distance it creates between them. The question is, will true love win out… or tortured legacy take over?” Oooooh! Drama!!!
“The Casual Vacancy” by J.K. Rowling
THAT’s how behind I am. I’m embarrassing myself here. ”When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?”
“Fevre Dream” by George R.R. Martin
George RR Martin + Vampires. Can you imagine the amount of blood and death there will be in this single book??? “Abner Marsh, a struggling riverboat captain, suspects that something’s amiss when he is approached by a wealthy aristocrat with a lucrative offer. The hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet; nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. York’s reasons for traversing the powerful Mississippi are to be none of Marsh’s concern—no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious York’s actions may prove. Not until the maiden voyage of Fevre Dream does Marsh realize that he has joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare—and humankind’s most impossible dream”.
Now do you see why I am so desperate?!?!
I’m also VEEERY behind on my list. I have Rowlins’ book on paper, so that one can wait a little bit. Now I have to search Ward’s and the other books… gnam…!!
