Outlander for Neophytes – Chapter 4: the quotes

Tired of me talking about Outlander yet? No? Great!!!

I know I go on and on and on and on about the wonderful quotes and the beautiful things that are said the books. And I know that one knows someones character through their actions and not their words. But, man! Jamie does say the most amazing things! He does do things time and time again to prove his character (God knows he does), but the things he says just makes my insides melt.

During my 5th or 6th re-read of Outlander (the first book in the series and the one I’ve re-read the most), I decided I wanted to copy my favorite quotes to a copybook, so as to have them all together. BIG MISTAKE! Soon I realized I was copying almost every word in the damn book!

So, my dear newbies, if you still aren’t convinced of reading the Outlander books. try not swooning with this following quotes. They might be out of context, but you’ll get the general gist. And I’ll try not to spoil anything for ya!

1/ “Harmless as a setting dove,” he agreed. “I’m too hungry to be a threat to anything but breakfast. Let a stray bannock come within reach, though, and I’ll no answer for the consequences.”

2/ ”When I woke, I was trussed up in the wagon wi’ the chickens, jolting down the road toward Fort William.”
”I see,” I said quietly. “I’m sorry. It must have been terrible for you.”
He smiled suddenly, the haze of fatigue gone. “Oh aye. Chickens are verra poor company, especially on a long journey.”

Chapter 4: I Come to the Castle

Our book-husband has a great sense of humor!!!

I wept bitterly, surrendering momentarily to my fear and heartbroken confusion, but slowly I began to quiet a bit, as Jamie stroked my neck and back, offering me the comfort of his broad, warm chest. My sobs lessened and I began to calm myself, leaning tiredly into the curve of his shoulder. No wonder he was so good with horses, I thought blearily, feeling his fingers rubbing gently behind my ears, listening to the soothing, incomprehensible speech. If I were a horse, I’d let him ride me anywhere.

Chapter 4: I Come to the Castle

OHEMGEE! I need a moment! Just for a general idea: Claire has just gone through the stones. Is still coming to grips to where (and when) she is. She is alone, scared, was attacked by Red Coats, kidnapped by Highlanders… You get the picture. And in comes Jamie to comfort her. How can you not love him? HOW?!?!

The actual wedding and the wedding scene have some of the best quotes ever!!! But I don’t want to spoil any surprises here. You Outlander fans know what I’m talking about… But apart from the sexy and romantic stuff, Jamie gets smart as well in that scene:

OutlanderQuote3

“I meant it, ye know,” he said softly. “I will protect you. From him, or anyone else. To the last drop of my blood, mo duinne.”
”Mo duinne?” I asked, a little disturbed by the intensity of this speech. I didn’t want to be responsible for any of his blood being spilt, last drop or first.
“It means ‘my brown one.’” He raised a lock of hair to his lips and smiled, with a look in his eyes that started all the drops of my own blood chasing each other through my veins. “Mo duinne,” he repeated softly. “I have been longing to say that to you.”

Chapter 16: One Fine Day

And that’s basically Jamie for you: fierce and tender in the same breath.

“Oh, aye, Sassenach,” he answered a bit ruefully. “I am your master….and you’re mine. Seems I canna possess your soul without losing my own.” He turned me on my side and curled his body around me. The room was cooling in the evening breeze from the window, and he reached to draw a quilt over us. You’re too quick by half, lad, I thought drowsily to myself. Frank never did find that out. I fell asleep with his arms locked hard around me and his breathing warm in my ear.

Chapter 23: Return to Leoch

And this scene is way better than just this quote. But it’s NSFW, if you know what I mean.

”I regretted it a bit at first, but then I began to think it was as well; living as we must, it would be verra difficult if you were to get with child. And now”—he shivered slightly—”now I think I am glad of it; I wouldna want ye to suffer that way.”
”I wouldn’t mind,” I said, after a long while, thinking of the rounded fuzzy head and tiny fingers.
”I would.” He kissed the top of my head. “I saw Ian’s face; it was like his own flesh was being torn, each time Jenny screamed.” My arms were around him, stroking the ridged scars on his back. “I can bear pain myself,” he said softly, “but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have.”

Chapter 32: Hard Labor

Oh, come on! It’s not physically possible for him to say all these wonderful things without our ovaries committing suicide!!!

OutlanderQuote1

Really? You want to kill me?

Are you still game for a couple more?

“Ye werena the first lass I kissed,” he said softly. “But I swear you’ll be the last.”

“Don’t be afraid. There’s the two of us now.”

“You are safe,” he said firmly. “You have my name and my family, my clan, and if necessary, the protection of my body as well. The man willna lay hands on ye again, while I live.”

“I swore an oath before the altar of God to protect this woman. And if you’re tellin’ me that ye consider your own authority to be greater than that of the Almighty, then I must inform ye that I’m not of that opinion, myself.”

“Does it ever stop? The wanting you?” “Even when I’ve just left ye. I want you so much my chest feels tight and my fingers ache with wanting to touch ye again.”

“Gentle he would be, denied he would not.”

If you still don’t want to read the Outlander series after this… sister, you gotta go to a doctor. There’s something seriously wrong with you!

80’s kid, 90’s teen. That sums it up quite nicely. Fan of almost everything. There’s not enough room in cyber-space to list everything (or every guy / fictional character I have the hots for), but I’ll try: Outlander book series ultimate fan (‘cuz JAMMF is just perfection), YA and romance novel avid reader, BSB fan to the death. Current TV Shows addiction: Outlander, Game of Thrones, Arrow (I ship Olicity. Hard.), The Big Bang Theory, Marvel Agents of SHIELD. Past addictions: Friends, Glee, Spartacus, Smash, The Tudors, Battlestar Galactica, Lost (I’m an ending-hater). The Hot List: Luke Evans, Gerard Butler, Theo James, Nick Carter, Henry Cavill, Chris Hemsworth, Stephen Amell, Hugh Jackman and I could keep going to infinity. Oh! And I believe in the God of Google!
