Can we stop thinking about Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser for like 5 minutes? I know, it’s challenging. Almost impossible. But if you are willing to participate in this mental task for a few minutes, you’ll be able to realize something wonderful. Outlander is coming to life, right before our eyes. We might all be dazzled by Sam’s smile, Sam’s eyes, Sam’s accent, Sam’s hair, Sam’s bod and how much Sam is Jamie. But before all that, is the story.
I had this moment of total clarity this past weekend when I saw the new teaser trailer that Starz premiered:
And I realized I couldn’t be any luckier or happier. My all time favorite book was coming to life. And it is exactly as I imagined it would be. It’s like the good people at Starz had one of those machines from the Matrix and just plugged it into the back of my head and extracted all the mental images I created in my mind that very first time I read the book. And I bet the same thing is happening to you guys.
This teaser is like reading the book. That’s how perfect it is. It’s so perfect, that the scene I care the less about is the shirtless Jamie. Ten years ago, when I first read the book, I hoped that some day, someone bright enough would decide to turn this into a TV series. Not a movie. A TV show. That would be the only possible option. The book is so rich and vast, that a movie would have never made it justice. Now, a decade later, I can’t believe my luck. Not only is the perfect book being turned into a show, but apparently, it’s being turned into the perfect show.
I know it might be putting a lot of pressure and high expectations on the show without having seen much from it. But every time a new photo or a new teaser comes out, the images keep getting better and better. It’s like watching the images I had in my head while reading the book.
Another thing that makes me realize how lucky we are, is that Starz is allowing us to be witnesses to the process. They might have kept it all hush-hush, but they decided to make us, the fans, a part of the whole process. And I believe that will prove to be key in the success of the show. Because Outlander is ours. Most of us have been reading and re-reading these books for years. We love these characters and we consider them to be family. Lallybroch is like our home. So take a step back, breathe in, and enjoy the process.
I know we are all dying to have a premiere date. We can’t wait for the show to premiere. We are barely surviving until we see on screen our favorite scenes. But the process is as much fun as the end result. Every new photo, video, on set report, Instagram pic fills us with so much excitement as to last us a week.
That was my moment of clarity, my epiphany. Right now it’s not important that I will probably die from excitement when the show premieres. The important thing right now is that Outlander is coming to life, right before our eyes. Enjoy it.
Well, we will either die of excitement or break Twitter! again
Cristin, you are so right! The premiere for Outlander will be the day we finally break Twitter!
I don’t know if I’ll even be able to Tweet while watching the very first episode. I’ll be too focused on trying not to hyperventilate…
