Start saying goodbye to Middle Earth. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” review

Can you believe it? I still can’t. I swear. I still haven’t accepted the fact that there won’t be any more trips to Middle Earth.

The other day I went to see ”The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”. Needless is to say, I cried like a baby.

If I have to be objective, I’d have to say it isn’t the best of movies. It really isn’t. It’s good. But not great. But, of course, I don’t have to be objective and honestly… I really can’t be. I loved the movie. For everything it stands for.

It’s fast paced, it’s emotional, it’s heroic, it’s full of action and heart.

Who else loved the fact that the movie started with Smaug’s attack on Laketown? I mean, yeah, of course it would start there. It’s exactly where the previous one ended. But I loved the fact that it jumped right into it. No prelude, no nothing. If you were caught of guard, this movie would totally run over you. And I loved that! One thing that could have worked better, would have been if we had been more invested with the town and it’s inhabitants.

During the 2nd movie, we spent some time in Laketown, but not as much as to care for it’s characters. Just about Bard and his kids. So when Smaug attacks, we only just care about Bard, his family Tauriel and the dwarves. So I wasn’t so much on the edge of my seat as I could have been. But anyways… that maybe was because of reading the book ad knowing what was about to happen (oops!)

Bard. I like this character. I remember liking him all those years ago when I first read the book. But Luke Evans turned him into something more. This Aragorn-type hero could have been just a copy of the Ranger from the North, but Bard is something else. He is similar but not quite the same. I love how Luke Evans plays him very serious, very taciturn, honorable, comanding and respectable. He is the people’s champion, as Percy very well said in the 2nd movie. He is a leader I would follow. And he is a family man. He does everything for them. And that’s just perfect.

Another thing that was perfect? Bilbo and Thorin. I said this movie had heart. Well, those two are it. Thorin is going through a lot. Down spiraling with dragon’s disease. But the sweet, cute scenes he has with Bilbo, when Bilbo with his innocence and goodness snaps him out of his madness, are the best. That was very good acting on the part of Richard Armitage.

Tolkien purists, you might wanna skip this paragraph. But even though this is not in the book, I loved the Kili – Tauriel storyline. It was cute, it was heartfelt. I loved those two. I was rooting for them even though I knew how it would end. And I loved Legolas. Ok, I’ve always loved Legolas so that wasn’t hard at all. But it was nice seeing him again.

I loved the movie. I want to watch it again and again and again. It means so much. It’s the final and defining chapter. Our last chance to visit Middle Earth and see all of our beloved characters. So I’m going to enjoy it as long as I can.

80’s kid, 90’s teen. That sums it up quite nicely. Fan of almost everything. There’s not enough room in cyber-space to list everything (or every guy / fictional character I have the hots for), but I’ll try: Outlander book series ultimate fan (‘cuz JAMMF is just perfection), YA and romance novel avid reader, BSB fan to the death. Current TV Shows addiction: Outlander, Game of Thrones, Arrow (I ship Olicity. Hard.), The Big Bang Theory, Marvel Agents of SHIELD. Past addictions: Friends, Glee, Spartacus, Smash, The Tudors, Battlestar Galactica, Lost (I’m an ending-hater). The Hot List: Luke Evans, Gerard Butler, Theo James, Nick Carter, Henry Cavill, Chris Hemsworth, Stephen Amell, Hugh Jackman and I could keep going to infinity. Oh! And I believe in the God of Google!
